Today, the southern part of Okayama City is well known as breadbasket of Okayama Prefecture. This area was originally the site of Kojima Bay, where a vast area of farmland was created through large-scale land reclamation. It was a massive undertaking, in which roughly 5,000 hectares of the bay was divided into eight sections and reclaimed, and because of the huge cost involved, construction did not begin for more than 10 years after the plan was established. Amidst this situation, one man who stood up was Denzaburo Fujita, a wealthy merchant from Osaka. Fujitagumi, led by Denzaburo, started work on the project in 1899, and the construction of Kojima Bay Reclamation Section No. 2 was completed in 1912. Omagari, Miyako, and Nishiki merged to form what was at the time former Fujita Village, with the exception of some parts that were incorporated into Kojo Village. Construction of Section No. 6 was completed in 1955, and the sixth districts of Miyako and Nishiki were also incorporated into former Fujita Village.
The name “Fujita” was chosen for the area in honor of Denzaburo Fujita, who was instrumental in the reclamation of Kojima Bay.
