This Ubame oak tree was originally planted in the garden of Arate Mansion (believed to have been located in what is today’s Furugyocho in Naka Ward), which was owned by the Igi Family, the chief retainer of the Ikeda clan of the Okayama Domain.
Igi Tadazumi (San-ensai), who served as the chief retainer from the end of the Edo Period (1603-1867) to the beginning of the Meiji Era (1868-1912), was also a great tea master, and it is said that he repeatedly built more teahouses on the grounds of Arate Mansion, having installed as many as 40 hearths on which to hang tea kettles. After some time, when repair work on the Asahi River was underway, the remaining teahouses in Arate Mansion were relocated to other parts within and outside the prefecture.
