1st workshop of Okayama Writer-in-Residence by Yusuke Norishiro

The 1st workshop of Okayama Writer-in-Residence workshop was held in Okayama City.
The Writer-in-Residence program invites a writer to stay in Okayama City to conduct research and writing. Yusuke Norishiro is a lecturer and winner of the 37th Joji Tsubota Literary Award and a nominee for the 169th Akutagawa Award for his latest work He will stay in Okayama City for three terms, conducting workshops and providing writing lectures.

The first workshop was held on Saturday, October 14 at the  Gate in the Okayama Castle.

The workshop was attended by about 30 participants, including high school students, university students and adults. First, participants learned from Mr. Norishiro about how to sketch scenery in writing, how to place and move viewpoints and how to express oneself when describing a scene.

After the lecture, participants walked out of the Gate to the banks of the Asahi River which runs just nearthe Okayama Castle. They sat down on the side of a walkway lined with trees to practice landscape sketching. Some sketched Okayama Castle in detail, others depicted a swan boat floating in front of them.

After the landscape sketching, the participants returned to the unknown gate to finish their works, and Mr. Norishiro talked about his thoughts on the questions he had received from the actual experience of landscape sketching.

Mr. Norishiro talked about the joy of encountering unique landscapes.
