Okayama City applied for “SDGs Future City” in 2018. National government selects local governments for the initiatives to promote the SDGs. Okayama City was designated as “SDGs Future City.
Okayama City's outstanding initiatives were evaluated as “Creation of new markets and business models,” “Extension of healthy life expectancy and reduction of social security costs.” The feature of Okayama is citizens’ activities and creation of opportunities for the people interested utilizing ESD.
Okayama City will promote SDGs and ESD in cooperation with various stakeholders in the community to deepen citizens' understanding.
Note 1: SDGs Sustainable Development Goals, 17 goals common to the world by the year 2030, which were unanimously adopted at the UN Summit in September 2015. The SDGs are international goals that comprehensively address a wide range of economic, social, and environmental challenges with the aim of realizing a society in which no one is left behind.
Note 2: The “SDGs Future City” is selected from among cities and regions that are promoting basic and comprehensive initiatives in line with the principles of the SDGs, especially those with high potential for creating new value in the three aspects of economy, society, and environment and for realizing sustainable development.

The “Sustainable Value Creation Tour” project, which was jointly applied for by four future cities in Okayama Prefecture (Okayama City, Maniwa City, Kurashiki City, and Nishiawakura Village), has been selected by the Cabinet Office as a “Wide-area collaboration SDGs model project” in 2022.
This project will promote tourism implementing Okayama Prefectural SDGs contents.
